Do You Know Your Personal Style?
When people ask about your personal style, do you have an answer? Worry not if you don’t because a lot of us never really figure this out completely. Discovering your own fashion style is actually a process that you have to consciously undergo, so if you’re ready for it, check out this guide to help unravel what your personal style is.
- Find style icons.
Don’t be pressured to find a single personality to influence your style because that can be quite a challenge. Finding multiple celebrities that reflect your fashion choices is a good starting point. Eventually, you will build your personal style based on the various influences of these individuals. To be more visual about unravelling your personal style, you can create a board that contains images of your style icons and fashionable ensembles that you are drawn to and then discover a pattern of what you really like.
2. Describe the outfits.
Draw your attention toward the outfits on your style board and then describe the fashion styles that you get from these looks. Look for items on repeat and take note of these. Do you mostly have a vintage fashion style pinned on your board or do you have a good selection of bohemian outfits? Are you into artsy fashion or are your outfit ideas generally on the sporty style? Is your board filled with pictures of classic chic or more modern, trend-forward pictures?
Are there colours and prints that dominate your photos? If you’ve noticed how you gravitate towards metallic, you may want one of those silver prom dresses for the Roaring 2020s that are available at online boutiques. Do you see combinations that are on repeat? Choose words that will encapsulate what you see on the board as these best resonate your style. Write these descriptions down and use them to label your clothing preferences. Eventually, this list of words will be trimmed down to your core personal style.
3. Add your own photos.
On days when you feel your most stylish self, take a selfie or have someone snap a photo of you that you can add to the board. You can even pick out items from online dress shops and imagine yourself wearing these by printing these out and placing you’re a photo of you on it (or if you know how to, just Photoshop yourself in it). The days when you are dressed to the nines can inspire your discovery of your true personal style.
4. Pick a signature outfit.
When you take a look at your favourite celebrities, they have their own signature pieces that fans become all too familiar with. In fact, much of our personal styles will be inspired by our celebrity fashion icons and the trends that they made famous. To name a few, Jackie O’s signature style was wearing oversized sunglasses with trendsetting conservative outfits, Audrey Hepburn is best associated with the little black dress, Marilyn Monroe is remembered for her high-waisted bottoms and curve-hugging outfits, and Elizabeth Taylor is looked up to for her fearless style and her favourite accessories, no less than a girl’s best friend – diamonds! And since every fashionable woman seems to have a signature piece or two, you should pick one too. Whether you opt for a personalised scarf, hat, jacket, brooch, or jewellery, the item should be all about you in order for it to be considered a key element of your personal style.
5. Check your current wardrobe
Finally, spend a day with your own clothes. Take a look at the items that you currently have in your closet. The items that you frequently wear will show you the fashion style that you are most comfortable with, which in turn will unravel your personal style.
The above tips should help you determine your personal style and help you pick the right dress for formal occasions!
