THIS IS HOW YOU GET TO BE HOMECOMING QUEEN

When I was in high school… Agh! That makes me sounds like I’m a freaking dinosaur.
We didn’t have homecoming dances and all that fancy shit. You want to know why? Because I attended a public school in some interior part of the country. There was a ‘Miss High School’ title though… Which I think is basically the same thing. No?
Just the other day I got an email request to write about ‘How you get to be homecoming queen’, and I had to share because I have heard so many stories from some of my friends about how much fun their homecoming was, and I’m left there like… the eff is homecoming? I honestly thought prom and homecoming were the same thing. Sigh, Private school kids.
With a lot of research and their help, I thought it would be interesting to share some tips on taking that crown home, I gather that this is a really big deal. Warning! If you don’t/didn’t have homecoming dances in your school, this might sound like a scene from a movie.
I understood that the homecoming dance is the first major event on the high school calendar, and pretty much any girl has the dream of becoming her school’s homecoming queen. But, homecoming is really a popularity contest, so you have to put in a little bit of work to become the queen of the dance, if you are not already overly attractive or captain of the cheerleading squad!
This stereotype isn’t quite true! But, you do need to do a little bit of groundwork to become homecoming queen. Check out our tips below to help you get the crown on homecoming night.
- Start Marketing Yourself
People are not going to vote for you if they have no idea that you are running. When you decide to run for homecoming queen, be sure that people know about it. But, go above and beyond and make people really think about why they ought to vote for you – in other words, give them good reason to do so. Just make sure you are more friendly than bossy!
- What About Making a Poster or Two?
Try to avoid creating a poster that is overly flashy, but still make sure that people are aware of you running for homecoming queen as they walk through the school halls. Baking some cupcakes or brownies could help, too!
- Mix with Different People
Try to associate with a diverse group of students. If you are the stereotypical cheerleader who hangs out only with other cheerleaders, then you’re only going to have one group backing you. Being someone who mixes with a diverse group of other students will ensure that you are far more likeable and more people are bound to vote for you. Don’t forget to check out the homecoming dresses from Prom Dress Shop, too, to make sure you shine on the night!
- Join a Few Clubs
Join a couple of different clubs or get involved in extracurricular activities to help you increase your popularity and reputation. By participating in a couple of clubs, you will also get to know a diverse group of people who will want to vote for you.
- Keep Studying
While it may be that your peers vote for you to be homecoming queen, your school might not allow you to run if you fail to keep your grades up. Be sure to always put your studies first so when it is time to vote, the school will be proud to have you as their homecoming queen.
- Finally, Accept the Crown
Try to pretend that you don’t know that the moment of glory is upon you and stand patiently in line with the rest of the homecoming court. Once your name is called out, try to look surprised and honoured as you step up and accept the crown being placed on your head. It’s sure to be what you have always dreamed of.
Overall, homecoming is always going to be a popularity contest, and it can sure be hard work competing with other popular girls. But, doing these things will help to enhance your chances so that when that vote comes in, you are crowned the queen.
